5th Annual Battle at Big D Attracts Nations Best Amateur Boxers

Over this past weekend Dallas PAL (Police Athletic League) and Dallas Parks and Recreation held a knockout event with the presentation of the 5th Annual Battle at D Boxing Tournament.

Held within the air-conditioned Centennial Building at Dallas Fair Park, the three day boxing competition is an officially sanctioned event of USA Boxing that annually attracts hundreds of the nation’s best male and female amateur boxers.

With three boxing rings in almost constant motion and a live announcer calling the action and announcing the winners, the Battle at Big D Boxing Tournament went the distance by providing a well-organized, secure event that showcased the heart and discipline of hundreds of young athletes.

The cornerstone program of Dallas PAL, this boxing program teaches and mentors the kids of Dallas by providing two, year-round youth centers that consistently promote self-esteem, self-control, self-discipline and perseverance.

The PAL boxing program is designed to help kids learn how to manage their frustrations by helping them develop critical thinking skills. And the DPD Youth Outreach Unit Officers and volunteers working with these kids are doing an absolutely phenomenal job engaging with them during events such as the Battle at Big D Boxing Tournament.

The PAL programs were initially only offered at Janie C. Turner Recreation Center located at 6424 Elam Road, however the unique style of camaraderie and mentoring being practiced by these police officers resulted in the opening of the Forest Audelia Boxing Gym in 2017.

Winners at the Battle at Big D Boxing Tournament were awarded beautiful Ringside Championship Belts per weight class, and the runners-up were awarded medals of honor.

Boxing in this program is providing countless young people the ability to advance through competition, earn scholarships and possibly advance to the USA Olympic boxing team. Ranging in age from 8-18, both male and female boxers who qualify under USA Boxing Guidelines, travel to sanctioned tournaments around the country often becoming nationally ranked.

Congratulations to all the winners of the Battle at Big D Boxing Tournament. Check out more of the action pictures and video clips at The Forney Post on Facebook !
