The Royse City football team put a damper on Forney High’s Homecoming festivities in the form of a 14-9 victory over the Rabbits.
With the victory, Royse City improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in District 8-5A Division II play.
Forney falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in District action. In the first quarter, both teams struggled to find any rhythm offensively. Consequently, this game remained scoreless.
But, then, midway through the 2nd quarter, the Rabbits’ senior linebacker Graham Burns recovered a Royse City fumble at Forney’s 43-yard line. Then, on the ensuing drive for Forney, Campbell Anderson helped the Rabbits’ offense finally ignite to life thanks to his 39-yard pass to Will Morgan.
However, after this big play, the drive stalled. But, senior kicker Matthew Huffman trotted on to the field and booted through a 42-yard field goal to give Forney a 3-0 lead at the 6:32 mark.
But, late in the first half, Royse City answered back as Tyson Oliver connected on a 63-yard pass to Tray Francis. When Francis was finally brought down, he had raced to Forney’s 2-yard line.
It should be noted that this 63-yard pass play was a very rare aerial attempt for the Bulldogs. Then, moments later, the Bulldogs’ junior running back Payton Petroff scored on a 2-yard TD run to give Royse City a 7-3 lead at the 1:23 mark.
At half time, the score was 7-3 in favor of Royse City.
In the 3rd quarter, Royse City increased their lead to 14-3 on another 2- yard TD run by Payton Petroff. This TD capped a 65-yard drive by the Bulldogs.
However, in the 4th quarter, Forney responded in a big way as Sean Stephens broke loose on a 51-yard TD run. After this TD, Forney attempted a two-point conversion play that was ultimately unsuccessful. So, the score stood at 14-9 with 11:32 remaining in the game.
In the final moments of this game, Forney still had a chance to win. But, the Rabbits’ last drive came up short and Royse City was able to run out the clock on their way to victory.
