With sole possession of 1st place in the District 13-5A volleyball standings on the line, the North Forney Lady Falcons defeated the Forney Lady Rabbits in four sets by a count of 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, and 27-25.
With this victory, North Forney improves to 26-11 overall and 7-1 in District 13-5A play. Forney High School falls to 22-9 overall and 6-2 in District 13-5A action.
It should be noted that both of these teams are definitely headed to the playoffs.
In the first set, the Lady Rabbits built an early 7-3 advantage. But, then North Forney fought back behind a long serving run by freshman DavaLynn Brooks.
By the time, her serving run ended, Ms. Brooks had given the Lady Falcons a 9-8 lead. Then, North Forney’s best player—Ms. Jayden Thompson, took over and dominated play. The senior not only had a lengthy serving run of her own, but she also registered several kills to help North Forney expand their lead.
The Lady Falcons built as much as a seven-point lead on three different occasions in the first set. The Lady Falcons ultimately would win the first set by a count of 25-21.
In the 2nd set, Forney High School answered back behind a strong serving run by sophomore Joanna Edwards. Edwards helped Forney High School turn an 8-4 deficit into a 13-9 lead. From there, the Lady Rabbits would go on and take the 2nd set by a count of 25-18.
In the 3rd set, Jayden Thompson put on a dazzling display of pure power as she pounded down numerous kills. Her efforts would help the Lady Falcons take the 3rd set by a count of 25-21. On the flip side, the Lady Rabbits’ Brooke Johnson, who is a sophomore, performed very well too as she registered several big kills in the 3rd set to give her team a chance. But in the end, Ms. Thompson proved to be the ultimate difference maker.
In the 4th set, both teams battled very hard. In fact, late in this set, the score was tied on three different occasions. But, when the dust had cleared, the Lady Falcons had secured the set and the match by a count of 27-25. The Lady Falcons’ main offensive star in this set was once again Ms. Jayden Thompson. She kept pounding down kill after kill when it mattered most.
Also, it should be mentioned that North Forney’s senior setter Natalie Rodriguez played one of her best matches of the season as she produced a huge number of assists. Also, North Forney’s Kennedy Cline, who is a sophomore, registered some key kills at critical moments in this match. Finally, senior Riley Borton made her presence known in the match with some important kills.
For Forney High School, their best players on this night were Brooke Johnson (Several kills in the 3rd and 4th sets), junior Emily Alvarez (Some Big Kills in the 4th set), senior Hannah Yudizky (Several Assists in the match), and senior Olivia Taylor (Several Big Blocks at the net in this match).
This match was played in front of a very loud and energetic crowd. In return, he fans were treated to a hard-fought match.
Right now, if the season ended today, the four playoff teams out of District 13-5A would be North Forney, Forney High School, Mesquite Poteet, and Kaufman. The District race is tight. So, it will be fun watching the action as the season comes to a close.
