On a very wet and rainy night, the Forney Jackrabbit football team rolled past Ennis by a count of 44-29.
With the victory, Forney improves to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in District 8-5A Division II play. Ennis falls to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in District action.
Overall, Forney’s offense was clicking on all cylinders in this game as they registered 513 yards (282 Rushing and 231 passing).
The stars in this game for Forney were senior running back Sean Stephens (27 carries for 181 yards and 3 TD’s), junior quarterback Campbell Anderson (13 of 21 passing for 231 yards and 2 TD’s), senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (4 receptions for 123 yards and 1 TD), and senior wide receiver Austin Ream 3 receptions for 58 yards and 1 TD/3 carries for 10 yards and 1 TD).
Midway through the first quarter, Forney began their first scoring drive of the night when they marched 47 yards in 9 plays for a touchdown. The TD came on an 8-yard run by Sean Stephens. So, Forney had an early 6-0 lead to work with. A key play on this drive was a 7-yard pass completion on a 4th and 6 situation from Campbell Anderson to Sean Stephens which helped the Rabbits pick up a vital first down. Two plays later, Stephens would find the end zone.
But, Ennis responded with a 9 play 57-yard touchdown drive of their own. The TD came on a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Dyllan Santos. After the TD, Ennis made the PAT which gave them a 7-6 lead at the 10:41 mark of the 2nd quarter.
However, Forney answered back with 17 straight points to build a 23-7 half time lead. The points came on touchdown drives that covered 67 and 90 yards. Also, in between these drives, Forney got a 23-yard field goal from Matthew Huffman as well. The TD’s came on a 54-yard run by Sean Stephens and a 73-yard pass from Campbell Anderson to Tyler Jones respectively.
The Forney defense deserves some accolades too. During one stretch in the 2nd quarter, Forney forced Ennis to punt twice and the Rabbits forced a ball over on downs sequence when they stopped a fourth down play. All of this happened on three consecutive drives.
The 2nd half was full of offense for both teams. First, Ennis came out of the locker room and went on a 7 play 47-yard touchdown drive which was capped off by a 9-yard run by Mr. Santos. After this TD, Ennis was successful on a 2-point conversion attempt which cut Forney’s lead to 23-15 at the 9:57 mark of the 3rd quarter.
But, Forney came right back to score a touchdown on a 6 play 61-yard drive. The TD came on a 14-yard pass from Campbell Anderson to Austin Ream. An important play on this drive was a 26-yard pass completion from Mr. Anderson to Mr. Tyler Jones on a 3rd and 9 situation which helped the Rabbits pick up a huge first down. Three plays later, the Anderson to Ream aerial connection would light up the scoreboard. So, now, Forney led 30-15 at the 8:20 mark of the 3rd quarter.
Then, Ennis would go on an 8 play 64-yard touchdown drive to trim Forney’s lead to 30-22 at the 4:05 mark of the 3rd quarter. The TD was registered when Ennis’ senior running back James Harris scored on a 12-yard run.
However, Forney kept firing back as well. The Rabbits would march 71 yards in 9 plays for another touchdown. The TD came on a 2-yard run by Austin Ream out of the Wildcat formation. After this TD, Forney led 37-22 at the 11:49 mark of the 4th quarter. A big play on this drive was a 38-yard pass completion from Campbell Anderson to Austin Ream. Two plays later, Forney would score.
But, Ennis would not go down easy and they proved that fact to be true in the form of a 12 play 70-yard touchdown drive. The TD was scored by James Harris on a 9-yard run. So, now the score stood at 37-29 in favor of Forney at the 7:50 mark of the 4th quarter.
Then, Forney would finally put this game in the win column with one more touchdown drive. The drive covered 52 yards in 9 plays. The TD came on a 1-yard run by Sean Stephens which made the score 44-29 for Forney. A key play on this drive was a 13-yard run for a first down by Campbell Anderson on a 3rd down sequence.
Forney’s defense would seal this game when senior defensive Rylie McMurren would intercept an Ennis pass in the end zone with 1:08 remaining.
