On January 22, in a game full of playoff intensity, the Mesquite Poteet Lady Pirate varsity basketball team defeated North Forney in an overtime thriller by a count of 62-60.
With the victory, Mesquite Poteet improves to 18-5 overall on the season and 8-0 in District 13-5A play. North Forney falls to 19-10 and 7-2 respectively.
At half time of this back and forth battle, Mesquite Poteet held a two-point advantage at 25-23. Then, in the 2nd half of this very important game, the volume of action and suspense definitely got turned up really high for sure.
Late in the 3rd quarter, Jordan Hammons connected on a three-point shot to put the Lady Falcons in front at 35-34. From that point on, it looked like North Forney was in control of the game as they stretched their lead to nine points at 45-36 by the early stages of the 4th quarter thanks in large part to some big baskets by Kaylin Smith and Chanler Brock.
Victory appeared to be in North Forney’s grasp. However, Mesquite Poteet had other ideas as they mounted a furious comeback.
Poteet’s comeback was led by their senior guard Tahjanay Perry. In the 4th quarter, Ms. Perry began to make shots from all over the floor as she almost single handedly brought her team back into the game. When Ms. Perry drove for a basket with about a minute left, this game was all tied up at 53-aal.
Then with 53.8 seconds left, North Forney’s Jordan Hammons was fouled. She made only 1 of 2 free throws which gave the Lady Falcons a 54-53 lead. The score would stay that way until the 6.3 second mark when Ms. Perry split two free throws to even the score at 54-all. This game was headed into overtime.
In the opening moments of the overtime period, Poteet’s Amaya Briggs connected on a three-point shot to give her team a 57-54 lead. It was a lead that Poteet would never relinquish on their way to ultimate victory. In the final seconds, Ms. Briggs made one final free throw which gave her team a 62-60 lead. After this free throw, North Forney was unable to get off a final shot and the game was over. Poteet had emerged victorious by a count of 62-60.
For North Forney, their top scorers in this game were Jordan Hammons (19 points) and Chanler Brock (12 points). As for Poteet, Tahjanay Perry led the way offensively in this game with 25 points. Also, Jallyah Johns (13 points) and Amaya Briggs (10 points) scored in double figures during this game for the Lady Pirates.
