In a victory to public education advocates across the state, Texas State Representative Lance Gooden was named to the House Public Education Committee by House Speaker Joe Strauss.
Serving his third term in the legislature, Gooden said, “I campaigned loudly and proudly for Texas public education during last year’s campaign, and I plan to continue down that road on this important committee. Now, more than ever, public education as we know it is under attack, and I’m grateful to Speaker Strauss for this appointment”.
Terrell Independent School District Superintendent Michael French was especially pleased with the news. “There’s no other committee more critical to students, parents, and teachers across our state than the Public Education Committee,” French stated. “Lance Gooden is the strongest advocate we have in Austin, and I’m grateful to him for working so hard for this appointment. I’m confident we will survive these attacks on public education with him fighting for us”.
Special interests have mounted a high-dollar campaign to push private school vouchers and “education savings accounts” that would divert millions of dollars from public schools with little accountability. Lance Gooden campaigned against like these in 2014 Republican Primary, and the education community was instrumental in his win.
“I can’t thank enough the teachers, students, parents, and public education advocates across Henderson and Kaufman Counties who have continued to support us on this journey. I look forward to fighting for them as we continue our crusade against the well-funded special interests that want to destroy our local school system and throw our tax dollars down a hole with no accountability”.
Gooden was also named to the House Insurance Committee and brings years of experience from his background in insurance to a committee that will be taking up issues critical to consumers and the insurance industry this session.
The legislative session, which began on January 10th, runs through Memorial Day on May 29th. Gooden may be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 512-463-0458.
