The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has scheduled more than 90 First Day Hike events at dozens of state parks to help you ring in the New Year.
Options include casual strolls, bike rides, cold water plunges, walking your dog, and even bird watching walks. There's something for everyone!
Dallas/Fort Worth Area
First Day Precious Prairie Hike at Cedar Hill – Take a moderate hike and learn about the plants and animals at Cedar Hill.
Additional hikes offered later in the day.
First Day Hike at Lake Arrowhead – The park is hosting two hikes, a 5.5-mile hike in the morning and a half-mile hike that afternoon.
Dino Dive and New Year's Celebration at Dinosaur Valley – This full day of activities will include First Day Hikes for all skill levels, a bike ride, games, food, a costume contest, and a plunge into the Blue Hole.
First Day Hike: Birding the Lakeshore at Tyler – Join us for a birding hike around the lake and learn about birding in the Pineywoods.
First Day Hike at Daingerfield –Start your year by taking a healthy step into nature with us! We will be hiking through our enchanting cathedral of trees.
First Day Hike at Blanco – All ages and well-behaved friendly dogs on leash are welcome on this 0.7-mile-long hike.
First Day Hike and Primitive First Day Hike at McKinney Falls – Come and share your first hike of the year with us! The Primitive option is 6 miles long, so plan accordingly.
Start the New Year With a Lost Maples Hike! at Lost Maples – Choose your hike: a more family-oriented, short hike or a more rigorous expedition with scenic overlooks.
First Day Hike - Rusty's Roost at Colorado Bend – Start 2018 with an intermediate 3-mile hike to a river overlook.
Stepping into the New Year on the Right Foot at Sea Rim – Join us for a beach hike followed by a New Year's treat of warm black-eyed peas and cornbread.
First Day Dog Walk at Sheldon Lake –Don't forget about your four-legged friend this New Year's! Bring out your dog on a 6-foot leash to get a good walk in and meet some new friends!
First Day Bike Ride at Brazos Bend – Bring your own bike; ride is approximately 7 miles long and suitable for all riders.
New Year's Resolution Hike at Abilene – Enjoy a 45-minute long ranger-guided hike to help you start your year off in nature.
First Day Hike at Caprock Canyons –Enjoy a stroll in the scenic canyons while learning about the geology, history, flora, and fauna of the park.
First Day Sunset Hike at Palo Duro Canyon – Come help us close out the first day of the new year in a most healthy and beautiful way: with a sunset hike!
San Antonio Area
Start the New Year with a Hike! at Lost Maples – Choose your hike: a more family-oriented, short hike or a more rigorous expedition with the scenic overlooks.
First Day Hike for Winter Birds at Choke Canyon - Calliham Unit – 'Chirp' in the New Year with a hike to look for migrating birds and common winter residents.
First Day Hike at Goliad – This easy 2-mile ranger-led hike will follow the Angel of Goliad Trail.
